Keep, family, donate, dispose
Four piles, in that order. Keep is yours. Family is packed and labelled by person, and shipped or delivered. Donate goes out with receipts. Only what is genuinely left over gets hauled. A house where 90 percent is disposed of is normal; a house where 100 percent is disposed of usually means something was missed.
Boxes get labelled, not just filled
Keepsake boxes are marked by room and by person, with a note of what is inside, because the person opening them may be doing it months later in another state and in no condition to guess.
As fast or as slow as you want

The most common version of this job is an adult child in another state who cannot get here. We will carry a phone through the house, room by room, and show you things before they move. You say keep, ship, donate, or go. Nothing leaves without an answer.
Donation receipts have real value on an estate
Household goods given to a qualifying charity can be deductible, and the receipt matters. We take donations to real organisations and bring the paperwork back rather than treating it as another disposal run. Talk to whoever is handling the estate about how to use them.
Check for the things that are always missed
Safe deposit keys, savings bonds, insurance policies, military discharge papers, the deed, cash tucked in books and coat linings, and jewellery in bathroom drawers. These turn up after the truck has gone more often than anyone admits.
You are allowed to take longer
Unless the house is selling on a fixed date or the rent is running, there is rarely a real deadline. Pressure to do it fast usually comes from other people's discomfort, not from the situation. If you want to stop halfway through a Saturday, we stop.

I live out of state. Can this happen without me there?
Yes, and it usually does. We arrange access with you, the executor, or the realtor, and walk the house on video so you can make the calls in real time. If you would rather not watch, tell us what matters and we will set anything that might be it aside instead of deciding for you.
Can you go slowly? I am not ready to empty it.
Yes. Multiple visits over weeks is a normal way to do this. There is no surcharge for it. If you need to stop partway through a day, we stop and come back.
What happens to things that are still good?
Donation first, where an organisation will take it. Furniture, kitchenware, linens, books, and tools usually find a home. We bring receipts back. Disposal is the last option, not the default.
What if we find something valuable?
It is set aside and handed to you. If you are not present, it is photographed and held. We would rather return a box of costume jewellery than have you wonder about the one piece that mattered.
The house is selling and we are on a deadline. How fast can you go?
A typical single-family home can be cleared in one to three days depending on size and how much sorting is wanted. Tell us the closing date and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
Do you handle the assisted-living move too?
Yes. Moving the furniture your parent is keeping into their new room is usually the same visit, so it does not become a second job to arrange while you are handling everything else.
